NYPD said that it established the new Web site as a result of a focus group meeting in which police officers told Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly that it was inconvenient for many of them to travel to police headquarters to make purchases.

According to NYPD, access to the encrypted Web site is password protected and requires department members to submit an application that is vetted by Web site administrators.

The department pointed out that approximately 350 articles of clothing and pieces of equipment – illustrated by photographs – are available on the site. Items include jackets, shirts, trousers, holsters and insignia.

According to NYPD, firearms, batons and handcuffs still must be purchased in person.

NYPD officers can purchase items using a credit card, the department said, and the Web site includes a shopping cart and other standard features of Web site commerce.

“This new service will make it more convenient for department personnel to acquire equipment without having to travel to police headquarters, regardless of where they live or where they are assigned,” Kelly said.
