Both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate have approved resolutions in support of National Public Works Week, scheduled for May 17-23. The theme for this year's National Public Works Week is renewal, revitalization and reinvestment in infrastructure.

Sponsored by the Kansas City, Mo.-based American Public Works Association (APWA) since 1960, National Public Works Week is a public education program aimed at demonstrating the importance of public works in community life. Past observations of the week have ranged from parades and displays of public works equipment to high school essay contests, and many mayors and governors make proclamations in support of the week.

The House resolution recognizes public works infrastructure, facilities and services as having "far-reaching effects on the United States economy and the Nation's competitiveness in the world marketplace" and playing a "pivotal role in the health, safety and quality of life of communities of the United States." It urges "citizens and communities throughout the United States to join with representatives of the Federal Government in activities and ceremonies designed to pay tribute to the public works professionals of the Nation and to recognize the substantial contributions that public works professionals make to the Nation."

"We applaud Chairman Oberstar (House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chair James L. Oberstar) and his colleagues for recognizing the critical role of public works professionals and the substantial service they provide on behalf of safe, secure, sustainable and efficient communities," said APWA President Noel Thompson. "National Public Works Week is truly a celebration of their achievements."
