From the Press-Enterprise: The Hemet (Calif.) City Council will vote next week to approve a measure that would accept a $2.26 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
The grant would fund the fire department for the next two years and prevent a station from being closed.
The grant also will allow the department to keep nine firefighters who were scheduled to be laid off, as well as add three more positions. The department currently employs 47 full-time firefighters.
For more information on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's SAFER grant program, which stands for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, go to http://www.firegrantsupport.com/content/html/safer/default.aspx, call 1-866-274-0960, or send an E-mail to: firegrants@dhs.gov.
A DHS official said 2010 SAFER grants applications may be available later this summer or early fall. Sign up for the E-newsletter on the upper right-hand corner of the http://www.firegrantsupport.com/ web site; an announcement regarding 2010 SAFER grant applications will appear in a future E-newsletter.
