Members of the fire service look back at 9/11 and observe changes that have taken place as a result of the events that day. “Perhaps the biggest change was the formation of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which was created as a direct result of the 9/11 attacks. Spinning out of DHS was the National Incident Management System, as well as the SAFECOM program and the Office of Emergency Communications, both of which were created to improve interoperable communications nationwide,” says Charles Werner who is chief of the Charlottesville (Va.) Fire Department, the chairman of the SAFECOM executive committee and FIRE CHIEF’s 2008 career chief of the year.

Linda Willing, a 20-year emergency services veteran, says fire-service women have been less visible in their communities and in the media since the events of 9/11.
