In areas where recreational paths cross
public roads, poor sight distances and other obstructions can cause
safety hazards for pedestrians and motorists. To help alert
motorists to the presence of path users approaching the
intersection, a motion-activated, solar-powered warning system was
developed by Cross Alert Systems, based in Warwick, RI. With the
system, onboard motion sensors detect path activity within 100-ft.
range and trigger warning lights to alert pedestrians and
motorists. An amber warning beacon flashes to forewarn motorists of
path users at or near the intersection, while a red light signals
the path user to stop and exercise caution at the crossing. System
components also include an 18-in. stop sign, 30-in. bike warning
sign, 10-ft.-high aluminum pole, and solar module with battery
backup. System poles communicate wirelessly with each other, using
radio signals. An integrated trail counter allows data to be
downloaded to a computer. Cross Alert Systems, Warwick,
