In Chillicothe, Ohio, a city located
just south of Columbus, Route 23 serves as the main road running
through town. The thoroughfare became extremely congested during
summer months, due to an abundance of tourist traffic heading to
nearby state parks and campgrounds. To reduce traffic congestion on
this busy main route, a bypass around the town was created. The
bypass offered two lanes in each direction, eliminating the need
for drivers to stop frequently.
However, because the stretch of road was relatively flat, flooding
and ponding on the roadway surface were potential problems that
could endanger traffic safety. To solve these problems, the center
median was lined with trench drains, made by ACO Polymer Products
Inc., based in Casa Grande, Ariz. Called TraffikDrain, the drain
system was selected because of its ability to withstand a variety
of vehicle types. The system enhances hydraulic flow through high
intake gratings and large flume outlets, thus ensuring fast
drainage into surrounding catch basins.
TraffikDrain modules were installed running parallel with the flow
of traffic. Each module features a cast-in rail, secured
ductile-iron grates and 1-in.-thick channel walls that safely
withstand heavy loads of fast-moving vehicles.
Today, the system is effectively managing stormwater runoff on the
bypass road, assuring a safer traffic environment. ACO drain
systems consist of factory-manufactured modules made from either
corrosion-resistant polymer concrete or fiberglass. The modules
align with grates to meet a variety of drainage applications. Sizes
include internal widths of 4, 8, 12, or 24 ins., and all sizes
feature a built-in slope. ACO Polymer Products Inc, Casa
