The Caterpillar PL61 pipelayer, capable of lifting 40,000 pounds, features a relatively compact frame designed for precision control, easy transport and operator comfort. The PL61 retains some features of the previous model (561N), including a two-speed load line and extendable counterweight; updates include an efficiency-oriented undercarriage and a hydrostatic drive system for smooth maneuvering. The 18-foot boom can be raised/lowered at two speeds to accommodate high-productivity or high-precision-oriented tasks; the operator controls the boom and other lift operations with the right-hand joystick (the left-hand joystick operates drive functions). Operators stay informed of machine performance due to a vantage-point cab design as well as a digital display monitoring system.
