The Kenworth T270 diesel-electric hybrid offers up to 50 percent fuel savings compared with non-hybrid models when used in service applications that involve equipment usage and start-stop driving, according to the company. Instead of drawing power from the idling engine when running cranes, tools, diagnostic equipment and other machinery, the truck can be switched to a 340-volt battery pack. Its power-management system provides enough electricity to run a 10,000-pound hydraulic crane.
