Chevrolet Avalanche comes in a flexible-fuel vehicle that runs on gasoline or E85 (a blend of 15% gasoline and 85% ethyl alcohol, produced primarily from domestically grown corn). Beginning in March 2005, the E85 vehicles will be provided for use in 28 member states of the Governors Ethanol Coalition (GEC), a bipartisan group of governors devoted to the promotion and increased use of ethanol. States range from Arizona and Arkansas to Wisconsin and Wyoming. By driving an E85 car, individuals can reduce harmful emissions of fossil fuels, safeguard the environment, decrease U.S. dependence on imported energy sources, and stimulate the national economy. The vehicles can be refueled from more than 300 public E85 fueling sites throughout the nation. Come in 4-door models, with 130-in. wheelbase, 2- or 4-wheel drive, 4-speed automatic transmission, 295-hp. V8 Vortec engine, and 4-wheel, anti-lock brakes. In less than 1 min., Midgate feature lets driver convert from a 6-passenger sport utility vehicle with a 5.3-ft. cargo box to a 3-passenger full-size pickup with 8.1-ft. cargo box. Also boasts top-box storage compartments, lighted cargo area, various air bags, and theft-deterrent system with keyless entry and panic button. Options range from sunroof to OnStar communication/navigation system.
