At Fort Bliss military base in Texas, a comprehensive construction project is transforming remote desert land into a functional mini-city, complete with modular buildings. Ranging from barracks and administrative facilities to classrooms and laundry rooms, the buildings vary in size from 24 by 60 ft. (double-wide structures) to 14 by 50 or 36 by 60 ft. Barracks were constructed without frames, while all other buildings had steel frames. Windows on each building include anti-terrorism force protection. Although targeted for installation over a 10-month time frame, work was completed 2 months ahead of schedule. Various subcontractors provided modular buildings and site work for the project, as part of a design-build contract. In all, Fort Bliss will include 199 modular buildings, designed to meet the military’s rapidly changing needs and reorganization plans. Williams Scotsman, Inc., Baltimore, MD
