In an effort to more effectively maintain its bus fleet, the
Washington metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) recently
enhanced its vehicle maintenance capabilities with the latest in
computer-based diagnostic tools.
The Vehicle Diagnostic Assistant (VDA), by Diagnostic Innovations,
LLC, Southfield, MI, is a user friendly, touch screen operated
computer based tool that assists technicians with the repair of
their vehicles. The VDA provides technicians with a vast array of
tools that focus on the vehicles engine, transmission, and braking
systems.
Victor Guillot, Senior Bus Engineer for WMATA says, The state of
the art vehicle diagnostic system will reduce the downtime for the
buses in the garage and improve efficiency.
WMATA and Diagnostic Innovations LLC have rolled out the system to
each of WMATAs maintenance locations. Harpal Kapoor, Assistant
Manager of Bus Engineering for WMATA says, With a full array of
engines, and a variety of transmissions, ABS brake and multiplexing
systems, the technicians can diagnose and analyze fault codes and
vehicle issues with a single diagnostic tool. It is one stop
shopping. They have access to fault trees and bus schematics at
their fingertips.
Robert Golden, Manager of Bus Engineering for WMATA says, Providing
the highest quality service to our bus patrons is of the utmost
importance to WMATA. Our patrons need to depend on timely bus
services and our buses must be on the street and on schedule. We
wanted our technicians to be able to accurately diagnose problems
and we wanted fast turn around time on repairs; by securing the
Vehicle Diagnostic Assistant we are now able to achieve those
goals.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority operates the
second largest rail transit system and the fifth largest bus
network in the United States. The Authority was created in 1967 by
an interstate Compact to plan, develop, build, finance and operate
a balanced regional transportation system. Metrobus and Metrorail
serve a population of 3.5 million within a 1,500 square-mile area.
The Metrobus has an operating fleet of 1,477 vehicles.
