Following its annual conference in July, the Washington-based National Association of Counties (NACo) has adopted new policies on a variety of issues, from food inspection to illegal dumping. More than 20 new proposals were submitted for consideration during the conference.

Some of the new policies include:

  • Supporting legislation that would permit state and local governments receiving funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to set aside a portion of those funds, in addition to any funds already allocated for administrative expenditures, to conduct planning and oversight to prevent waste, fraud and abuse.
  • Requiring on-site inspections by the U.S. Department of Agriculture of American companies that manufacture food products in foreign countries, and recommending that all imported food products be marked with the country of origin.
  • Supporting legislation that would encourage agencies at the federal and regional level to integrate housing, transportation, energy and environmental planning to support sustainable development.
  • Urging Congress to support bi-national projects between private, state and federal, tribal and public organizations that develop and implement programs to educate, prevent and clean up illegal dumping along the United States-Mexican border.
