Govpro.com’s recent
three-part series on bedbugs has generated some reader responses.
“Early
detection before a bed bug infestation becomes established is critical to the
over all success of any bed bug control program,” said consulting urban
entomologist and bed bug expert Paul Bello, president of Atlanta-based PJB
Pest Management Consulting.
Keeping tabs on the critters
is crucial, added Bello. “Enacting a monitoring program is critical because it means
you are being proactive in searching for infestations, or the early signs of
one that is just beginning. By
monitoring, you are able to identify the problem before it has a chance to
increase to the point where people start reporting that they already have been
bitten.”
Bello cites the bedbug problems at the Chicago Public Schools’ headquarters
building (see the first installment in the Govpro. com bedbug series for
information), where the district has finished
treating all the floors of its building after an employee reported bites. “At this stage,” said
Bello, “your trouble has already gained a foothold, just like the school
headquarters that had to treat 20 entire floors.”
Bedbug infestations are no trivial matter, Bello told Govpro.com. “According to a recent report from the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, bedbug allergic reactions are often untreated and misdiagnosed. For most people, bedbug bites may appear only as mildly itchy red marks. But those who are allergic can experience intense itching, swelling, redness, hives and blisters that can lead to infection. And, considering the immense growth rate of bedbug infestations across the country, there is no place for complacency anymore when it comes to seeking them out.”
