The statewide fuel system contract was based on successful deployment of Maximus fleet maintenance and management software, implemented by the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) in 2006 to manage its fleet of 1,500 vehicles.

DOT officials selected FuelFocus through a competitive bidding process, after successfully completing an 18-month pilot test at five major fuel sites. The system’s hardware performed well in Maine’s harsh winter weather, while providing a fully integrated fleet- and fuel-management solution.

Going forward, Maine DOT also will be evaluating the MAXIMUS wireless automated fueling solution for motor-pool vehicles at the agency’s Augusta headquarters.

Integration throughout the state

“The Maine Department of Transportation has made the highest possible commitment to use our resources to their fullest potential," stated Dan Howlett, project manager for Maine DOT. "The Maximus FuelFocus product is allowing us to provide fuel services to all other state agencies.”

The DOT will use FuelFocus to automate fueling operations at 92 locations. The integrated system will enable Maine DOT to automate the collection of fuel consumption and purchase data for the Maine DOT fleet as well as for other agencies throughout the state.

FuelFocus ensures that only authorized vehicles will be fueled and allows the Maine DOT to immediately validate vehicle information in real time. All data is captured within one integrated fleet management database and application.

“In this time of rising fuel costs and corporate budget cuts, Maine is one of the many states now using FuelFocus to help manage their fueling operations and control their fuel budgets,” said James Schnepp, vice president of sales and marketing with the Asset Solutions Division of Maximus.

Other states using the FuelFocus solution include the State of Minnesota DOT, the state of Indiana, the Illinois Tollway and the State of Washington DOT. FuelFocus customers also include various cities, counties, transit and private-sector fleets.

Maximus is a leading provider of fleet maintenance and management software that offers a fully integrated, real-time, automated fueling solution.
