The overhaul of the baggage handling system is part of a $22.5 million project to expand the terminal at BNIA and to update the airport's current system to meet the Transportation Security Administration latest safety and security requirements.

“Siemens has a proven ability to design and build a high-quality, integrated, airport logistics solution,” said Dar Almeter, president of LPCiminelli Construction Co. “They also presented the best solution in terms of total cost of ownership.”

The scope of the contract includes more than 4,500 feet of conveyor, six baggage-claim units and 19 high-speed diverters. Siemens will design the baggage handling system with integrated explosive detection screening, which will incorporate two security “pods.” Siemens also will install six explosive detection screening machines, three for each security pod.

The project is scheduled to be completed early next year.

In 2006, Buffalo Niagara International Airport served more than 5 million passengers.
