To applaud best practices, the National Purchasing Institute (NPI) founded the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement (AEP) award program in 1995. The AEP is awarded annually to those organizations that demonstrate excellence by obtaining a minimum score on a rating of standardized criteria. The program is designed to measure innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement, and leadership attributes of the procurement organization.

To receive the award, jurisdictions are required to submit a detailed application with supporting documentation. A committee of procurement professionals conducts the evaluation.
The 2006 AEP awards were announced at the 11th Annual Presentation of the Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Awards during the NPI’s 38th Annual National Conference and Products Exposition in Tucson, AZ.

AEP is sponsored by the California Association of Public Purchasing Officers (CAPPO), Institute for Supply Management (ISM), Florida Association of Public Purchasing Officers (FAPPO), National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO), National Association of Educational Procurement (NAEP), National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP), and NPI. Associate sponsors include the Airport Purchasing Group (APG), National Intergovernmental Purchasing Alliance, Texas Purchasing Management Association (TPMA), The Innovation Groups (IG), and U.S. Communities.
